Adults

Individuals often wonder when to seek professional counseling. The decision to see a therapist is never easy, but it is often the first step toward healing.

Our counselors are experienced in various types of therapy.  We can teach you the skills to resolve your problems.   We can increase your understanding about your feelings.  You can use these tools to your advantage to reach your goals.  The tools can be tailored to your needs.  We treat you as an individual and you can choose tools from a variety of therapy modalities.

The therapists or counselors at Cornerstone Psychological Associates will initially work with you or your loved one to establish realistic and concrete goals that will determine the direction of the counseling. Our therapists are knowledgeable about the most recent scientific research regarding specific conditions and how to best provide treatment for these symptoms.  We combine this knowledge with first-hand experience in providing supportive counseling to adults.  Our therapists' approach will often involve cognitive-behavioral strategies in addition to the creation of an emotionally supportive partnership where you can feel comfortable to self-reflect and discuss your problems.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is a type of counseling that involves helping a client gain insight into the thinking and beliefs that effect emotions as well as behaviors and choices. The behavioral part of this approach implements strategies that have been researched to improve and manage feelings, increase energy, and resolve stressors and problems.

Our counselors know therapy styles ranging from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Solution Focused Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.  The principles in these therapies overlap so we can help match your style of relating to the type of therapy.  For example the tools can be: tasks to accomplish, guided imagery, self talk, books to read, release of emotion in a controlled manner, writing, or homework assignments.  We will help you find what works best for you.

Therapy can be brief or may take longer if the issue is complex.  The work goes at a pace you can handle.  We challenge as we encourage you to heal.  The work can be intense and frequent or spaced over weeks as your schedule allows.

The process of healing is DIFFERENT from the process of fixing what is broken.  The two are intertwined, but the mechanisms are different.  Healing is not an outcome, but rather a process from the start.  What it needs is a safe environment to allow for healing to manifest.  There is a combination of skill building, understanding more about how your mind works, and experiencing the difference that a well integrated heart and mind can make.  It builds a sense of confidence and competence about who you are and what you can accomplish.  This EXPERIENCE gives a turbo-charge to the process of change.

Counseling and therapy can be effective treatment for a variety of mental health issues ranging from depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief issues, and couples issuesTherapy can also be helpful in addition to medication treatment for disorders by providing support as well as enabling you to gain increased insight and develop more effective strategies to improve quality of your life and prevent symptoms from returning in the future. The therapists at Cornerstone Psychological associates are experienced in treating many problems with adults.
